First, let’s start with a brainstorm
I want you to begin by writing down all of your target audience’s pain points. What are they struggling with? What is at the forefront of their minds? What’s holding them back from success?
Your list might go on and on, or it might just be a few things. There is no wrong answer. And you know your target audience best. So, just put down every idea that comes to mind.
Next, grab your highlighter
Go through that list of pain points and highlight all of the things that you know you can help within the scope of a 4-8 page PDF. Pick something you know you can tackle because you already have great tips that you can offer up.
This step will have eliminated pain points that are too broad or that you aren’t completely confident in. And that’s perfect because we want to pair down the list to make the topic selection process easier. I say you should be able to tackle the topic within 4-8 pages because, like I said earlier, time is of the essence. A 20-page PDF would offer a ton of value, but people need to get in, get out and feel like they got something for their time investment.
Now it’s decision time
Choose the one pain point that feels easiest to teach about and most impactful for your audience. This might take a bit of thinking, or you might have you answer right away.
Whatever topic you narrow it down to, it should address a major issue that your audience is experiencing. And it should feel easy (and not panick-inducing) because you’re really confident in your ability to tackle it.
Keep in mind that you’re not expected to be a New York Times bestselling author! Your PDF can include a workbook, checklists, quick tips and chunks of text. In fact, I think the best opt-in’s do include at least one of those things because reading is hard. We have so many things drawing our attention elsewhere that quick and easily digestible content is best.
Now, whatcha gonna call it?
The title can make or break your opt-in. It doesn’t have to be splashy or oh-so-clever! But it does have to be clear and concise; the potential reader needs to know what they’re going to achieve by downloading and reading this freebie.
Time is of the essence. People won’t download a freebie unless it’s something they think will really be worth it.
So, how can you create a title to draw in the masses? Here are a few examples:
- How to ____
- How to ____ in 7 Days
- Make ____ in 5 Easy Steps
- 10 Ways to ____
- What You Need to Know About ____
These examples tell people exactly what they’re going to get. They’re clear and simple, and there’s no guess work involved. (Ahem… and titles like this are way easier to write than the super clever ones that might be too vague to grab attention.
Ta da! Now you’ve got your topic and your title.
That wasn’t so hard, was it? We all agonize over these things because we want to represent ourselves in the best, most awesome ways. But by agonizing over th process, we hold ourselves back from achieving the outcomes. Your opt-in doesn’t have to be a chore, and it certainly doesn’t have to take you months to write.
